Describe how to enhance an infant's parasympathetic nervous
system. Develop a plan to implement a Baby's First Massage
program.
As

food for healthy mental and physical development – a
fact clearly supported by both ancient tradition and contemporary
research. Massage is attentive, pleasurable touch that can
promote your baby’s well being while increasing your
ability to respond to his or her needs.
The positive effects of infant massage have been well researched
in studies such as those sponsored by UNICEF and the University
of Miami School of Medicine.

This workshop will cover the basic know how of hot/cold stone
massage, bring a new technique into your practice and learn
the art of working with hot and cold stones. The course will
cover supplies needed, physical effects, contraindications,
treatments and marketing.
A
new and exceptional bodywork called stone massage is combining
the time-proven healing therapies of hot and cold applications
and therapeutic massage. Used in relaxing spa treatments as
well as for chronic tension and pain, stone massage is increasingly
in demand. Massage with smooth, heated stones, sometimes contrasted
with cool ones, is a nurturing experience beyond compare.
Imagine relaxing back on a sun-warmed pebble beach and totally
letting go with the calming and nurturing touch of massage.
In this comforting and healing massage, stones of varying
sizes and weights are settled comfortably into the body contours
on areas that tend to hold tension like the back muscles,
abdomen and face. Oiled stones are then used in flowing strokes
to relax the whole body.

| Introduction
to Reflexology |

Prerequisite:
None
Instructor: Michele Carlino
Day:
Sumday
Date:
TBA
Time:
9:30 - 2:30
Hours:
5
Cost: $100
Students taking this course will learn the history of reflexology,
anatomy of the hands and feet as it relates to reflexology
points, and how to effectively work these points to achieve
a therapeutic response. The student will learn how to develop
a routine to treat specific problems such as asthma, insomnia,
stress and more.
Reflexology promotes the body’s marvelous ability to
adjust and balance during times of stress. Simply taking time
out to relax can help you let go of tension and enjoy a feeling
of restored balance in your mind and body.
Beyond relaxation, reflexology has been shown to improve circulation.
Increasing circulation boosts the supply of oxygen and nutrients
to your muscles and other tissues and speeds the elimination
of waste products such as lactic acid and stress hormones.
This, in turn, reduces muscle tension and soreness, decreases
healing time for injuries, and reduces swelling from injuries
or illness. Immune function, skin tone, and the ability to
concentrate also improve when circulation is increased. |

Deep Tissue Massage
is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of
muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of
tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure
on the contracted areas, either following or going across
the fiber's of the muscles, tendons and fascia.
This course is designed to educate the Therapist to deeper
pressure than that is used in the Basic Swedish Massage. The
course will give the body worker another touch technique that
can be integrated within their practice to meet the needs
of the clients.
No
matter what kind of work you specialize in, it is important
that each student obtain quality hands-on supervision to perfect
the subtle aspects of biomechanics and touch. For this
reason, class size will be limited to 14 students.
Please arrive
on time and bring one set of clean twin size sheets. |

| Massage
and Pregnancy |

Prerequisite:
CMT
Instructor: Stella Gesner, NCTMB
Date:
TBA
Time:
9:30 - 2:30
Hours: 5
Cost: $75
This course provides the therapist with knowledge and skills
to safely massage and relieve the common ailments that can
occur during pregnancy. Topics covered include contraindications
and points to avoid, draping and positioning and other special
considerations for this type of massage. |
|
Massage can help with many of the aches and pains you experience
as your body changes during pregnancy. Massage can relieve
pain in your muscles and joints that must support added and
redistributed weight; increase flexibility, making it easier
for your body to adjust to a changing shape; ease constipation,
gas and heartburn as general relaxation stimulates intestinal
movement; reduce excess fluid retention by gently pushing
fluid into circulation where it can be eliminated; slow the
progress of varicose veins as enhanced circulation lowers
pressure on bulging veins; and relieve headaches caused by
tension, constipation, or buildup of metabolic waste products.
In the postpartum period, nature sets about undoing in eight
weeks what it took nine months to create. Though it may be
difficult, it is as important to care for yourself now as
during your pregnancy. Massage can help you handle the physical
demands of caring for a newborn by reducing tension and increasing
energy. If you are nursing, a relaxing massage can help since
tension interferes with milk letdown. Psychologically, massage
can nurture and comfort you whether or not you are experiencing
postpartum “blues”.

Thai
Massage
,
or Nuad Bo-Rarn as
it is known in Thailand , is an ancient holistic therapy with its
roots in Buddhism, yoga, and Ayurvedic and Chinese Medicine.
Thai Massage sees illness as reflecting an imbalance in the body
and/or mind, and seeks to re-establish harmony by an interactive
manipulation of the body using passive stretching and
gentle pressure along energy lines ( Sen) . The effect
is uniquely relaxing as well as energizing
. Sessions are traditionally performed on a floor mat with
the client comfortably dressed in loose clothing. Therapists and
clients love the way it feels .
Introduction
-(7 hours) -
A workshop introducing Thai Massage and teaching specific
skills therapists can integrate into an existing practice.
Lecture, demonstration, and plenty of hands-on time .
Students will learn passive stretches and pressure
with their thumbs, palms, elbows and feet to increase flexibility,
relieve muscular and joint tension, and balance energy. Students
learn a mini one-hour session in a relaxed pace, with the client
lying primarily on their back. You can choose to work on a floor
mat or massage table. Handouts provided. There will also be videos
and textbooks for sale.
A
Taste of Thai with Herbal Packs - (7 Hours) - On the
second day, we learn about the traditional herbs used in Thai
herbal packs, and then apply the heated packs during a one-hour
session done on the table or floor. The herbal packs are wonderful
used during a Thai session, or as an added bonus with a regular
massage, being placed on specific parts of the body that need attention.
The herbs are wrapped in a cotton cloth, heated, and applied
directly over the client's clothing. Clients love the effect and
added benefits. ITM uses a powerful combination of over 20 herbs
and flowers that are sent to us directly from Thailand. These are
the best herb packs available.
